Red Lights

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

It seems that almost daily on my commute from Columbia City to Warsaw for work, I watch someone blow through a red light somewhere on 30. Yesterday was an especially active day.

As I stopped for the stoplight at Larwill, a semi coming up from behind blew right through it. It wasn't "almost red", it was red. And if that wasn't enough, when I got to the 30 and Center Street intersection, I was in the right-hand turn lane, to turn onto Center Street and again the light just turned red. From the left lane came a car that ran the light, proceeded onto the eastbound lane of 30, got halfway through, had a change of heart, and backed up into the turn lane again. Pure idiocy!

Are we in such a hurry that we can't stop for the few seconds it takes for a light to change? What if you hit someone? What if that someone was a loved one? I can't imagine the guilt a person would carry over injuring or killing someone because of being an impatient driver.

Stoplights are put up for our safety and traffic flow, not put up as a personal annoyance. Think about the danger you are causing by not stopping. Are the people with the green light supposed to take their life in their own hands because you are too selfish and unconcerned to stop at a red light?

When you finish this letter, ask yourself, "Is this me?" If you see yourself, but still think you are above the law, then I will pray for your victims.
