At last year’s inaugural “Famous Hoosiers” program Dr. Richard Gunderman made a presentation about Hoosier legend John Wooden.
This year, Gunderman returns for Chautauqua-Wawasee’s second annual series highlighting another famous Hoosier, Eli Lilly. Attendees will learn about the accomplishments of this early medical pioneer and how he impacted the lives of Hoosiers, according to a news release from Chautauqua-Wawasee.
Lilly was born in 1838 and died in 1898. He served as a colonel in the Civil War and kept the nickname colonel for all of his adult life. As a teenager, a visit to a drugstore, led to his career in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1876, he started the company now known as Eli Lilly and Company. His first innovation of many was the use of gelatin coating for pills.
To this day, the Lilly family has carried on his legacy for running both the largest for-profit corporation and the largest philanthropic organization in Indiana for the betterment of all Hoosiers.
The event will be Saturday, beginning with light refreshments and a cash bar at 4:30 p.m., followed by the presentation from 5 to 6 p.m. at Oakwood Resort, 702 E. Lake View Road, Syracuse. It is free to attend
