HUNTINGTON – Emalee Duggins scored 13 points, but the Whitko girls basketball team lost 49-31 Friday at Huntington North.
“Without question, this was our best effort of the year regardless of the final score,” said Whitko coach?Rick?Bragg.
The Lady Wildcats were down by one heading into the second quarter and trailed by seven at halftime.
However, they outscored Huntington North 11-9 in the third quarter, and were down 39-31 with three minutes left in the game.
That’s when Huntington North standout Maddy Robrock, who had been averaging nearly 25 points per game, scored all four of her points to lead a 10-0 run that put the game out of Whitko’s reach.
“Maddy is one of the top post players in the state, and I cannot praise our defensive effort enough in stopping her,” Bragg said. “Gus Garr and Kayla Schipper both played perfect defense in denying her the ball, while at the same time the help defense was there as well.”
Kayla Schipper scored 11 points for the Lady Wildcats (2-4), while Sarah Hewitt added five.
“We have shown progress in leaps and bounds,” Bragg said. “Our intensity was the best tonight it has been all season.”
NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester girls basketball team lost 35-30 to Mississinewa Friday in a home game.
Manchester (3-2) overcame a slow first quarter to take a 14-13 lead by halftime.
However, the Lady Squires went without a field goal in the third quarter, only scoring on a free throw from Kennidy Lauer and on another from Kiera Hatfield.
Mississinewa headed into the fourth quarter up 21-16.
The Lady Indians extended their lead to 27-16 before the Lady Squires went on a 14-3 run to cut the deficit to one with 1.5 seconds left.
However, Manchester had to stop time by calling a timeout with none left, resulting in a trip to the free throw line for Mississinewa.
The?Lady Indians sank both, and hit two more after being fouled with less than a second remaining for the five-point victory.
Hatfield led Manchester with 14 points, while Kennedy Fierstos added six.
The Lady Squires will play today at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Wayne Luers.

BOURBON – The?Triton girls basketball team struggled in a 50-21 home loss to Class 4A Plymouth Friday.
Triton got off to a slow start and was down 13-1 by the end of the first quarter.
