Prep Roundup: Hare Leads Warriors To Runner-Up Finish

NEW HAVEN – Spencer Hare placed fifth to lead the Wawasee boys cross country team to a second place finish out of 16 teams in the “AA” division at Saturday’s New Haven Invitational.

The Warriors had a team score of 110. Hare ran the race in 16:42.6, while Luke Griner was sixth (16:47.5), Michael Hammer placed 13th (17:08.9), Thomas Conley finished 34th (17:41.7), and Karlson Hand came in 53rd (18:07.5).

Wawasee’s girls team was fourth (145 points) out of 19 teams in the “AA” division.

McKenzie Smith was 12th (20:15.9) for the Lady Warriors, while Bailey Mayhew placed 24th (21:05.8), Emma Ebright came in 25th (21:06.2), Cammy Kryder finished 35th (21:24.7), and Lily Tyler placed 49th (21:52.3).

The Tippecanoe Valley girls finished 17th out of 21 teams with a team score of 400.

Valley’s boys team was 18th out of 25 teams in the “A” division with a score of 438.  

Valley’s Haley Hoover finished 64th in 23:16, while Ava Craig was 84th (24:01.3), Lorena Santiago came in 95th (24:29.5), Marissa McLean placed 113th (25:02.4), and Lauren Sponseller finished 124th (26:03.7).

On the boys side, Matthew Howes placed 23rd for the Vikings (17:50.8), while Mitchell Smith was 54th (18:31.7), Justin Peconga placed 108th (19:42.), Chase Miller came in 162nd (20:44.1) and Jace Holloway placed 174th (21:06.1).

Whitko placed 20th (509) in the girls “A” division, with Lily Spurlin placing 66th (23:20.9), Amaya Norman coming in 120th (25:50.3), Liz Foutz placing 133rd (26:23.8), Laura Jackson finishing in 141st (27:15.7), and Zoe Foutz placing 170th (33:58.3).

Whitko’s boys team came in 22nd in the “A” division. Zack Freel placed 74th (18:62.2) for the Wildcats, while Jacob Porter was 122nd (20:01), Jayden Stratton came in 158th (20:42.4), Gavyn Alexander placed 223rd (23:34.2), and Ethan Joseph was 232nd (24:47.8).



Warsaw Runners Take Fifth At Culver

CULVER – The Warsaw girls cross country team placed fifth out of 14 teams in the elite division at Saturday’s Culver Academies Invitational.

The Lady Tigers had a team score of 172.

Warsaw’s Wini Barnett was 23rd (19:34.10), while Adree Beckham was 24th (19:38.50), Remi Beckham came in 33rd (19:55.7), Angie Sanchez placed 52nd (20:42.1), and Megan Dawson was 57th (20:48.2).

Warsaw finished second in the girls reserve race, with Taylor Gunter leading the way in 17th place (21:05.6).

Warsaw’s boys team split its varsity starters between the elite division and the freshman/sophomore race.

The Tigers were fourth out of 16 teams in the freshman/sophomore race, with Sam Lechlitner placing second (17:08), Tanner Stiver finishing fourth (17:19), Jacob Kissling coming in ninth (17:34), Harrison Phipps placing 24th (18:04) and Hunter Thompson coming in 32nd (18:23).

Warsaw was 12th out of 13 teams in the elite division, with Zeb Hernandez placing 15th (16:22.9), Jack Horoho coming in 76th (17:40.2), Fernando Niebbia coming in 99th (18:25.3), Anthony Bass placing 101st (18:30.6), and Luke Howard coming in 107th (18:55.4).



Warsaw Spikers Slide Into Second

The Warsaw volleyball team placed second Saturday at its own invitational.

The Lady Tigers began the day with a 25-17, 25-10 win over Jimtown before topping Fort Wayne Snider 25-23, 25-14 and defeating Rochester 25-22, 25-20.

Warsaw lost 25-18, 25-12 to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger in the championship match.

The Lady Tigers (21-7) were led by Kacy Bragg’s nine kills, 18 digs, 74 assists and three blocks.

Elizabeth Schmidt added 23 digs for Warsaw, while Kylie Smith tallied 32 digs, Katie Swanson registered 21 kills, 13 digs and 12 aces, and Betty Barnett spiked 29 kills.

Tippecanoe Valley (13-11) went 1-3 on the day.

The Lady Vikings lost to Angola 25-23, 25-15 and LaPorte 25-10, 25-12, before beating Jimtown 25-20, 25-17.

They finished play with a 25-19, 22-25, 15-10 loss to Northfield.



Wawasee Goes One For Three

BREMEN – The Wawasee volleyball team won one match and lost two others Saturday at the Bremen Tournament.

The Lady Warriors (11-12) lost 25-15, 25-18 to NorthWood, and 23-25, 25-17, 15-3 to Culver Academies, before beating John Glenn 25-23, 25-21.

Hannah Gaerte and Molly Jones tallied nine kills apiece for Wawasee, while Elizabeth Kleopfer registered 29 assists, Brooke Heche recorded 25 digs, Peyton Rookstool had 15 digs and Madison Simmons notched 13 digs.

Triton lost all three of its matches at the tournament. The Lady Trojans lost 25-15, 25-22 to Bremen; fell 25-12, 25-12 to Prairie Heights; and then lost to South Bend Adams, 25-16, 25-11.

Triton’s JV team fell 25-22, 25-21 to Fairfield, and 25-16, 25-22 South Bend Adams.



Lakeland Christian Crushes Maconaquah

BUNKER HILL – Tori Calizo scored two goals to lead the Lakeland Christian girls soccer team to a 5-1 win Saturday at Maconaquah.

Jessi Calizo, Lauren Starrett and Anna Reimink also scored for the Lady Cougars (9-2-2), while Maddie Paris was in the net with four saves.

Lakeland Christian will play Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Culver Community.



Squires Squash Competition At Classic

ZIONSVILLE – Saturday was two matches, two wins for the Manchester boys soccer team at the Zionsville Classic.

The Class 1A Squires defeated two 3A squads. They topped Evansville North 6-2 before beating Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger 2-0.

Manchester’s Harley Kruschwitz scored five goals and assisted on two more across two matches, while Caleb Stout tallied three goals and Isaiah Davis registered a goal and an assist on the day.

Konrad Borgmann made a combined 19 saves for the Squires (12-0), while Dillon Gish registered five saves in the first match.



Valley Splits Difference At Winamac

WINAMAC – The Tippecanoe Valley coed soccer team split its matches at Saturday’s Winamac Tournament.

Valley lost 2-1 to Winamac to start the day, with Joel Cisenoros scoring the Vikings’ lone goal.

Valley rebounded with a 4-3 win over Washington Township.

Bolstered by a hat trick from Caleb Pentgen, the Vikings came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit.

Harrison Vining tallied a goal and an assist for Valley.



Tigers Take Sixth At NLC Tournament

SYRACUSE – The Warsaw boys tennis team placed sixth, while Wawasee finished seventh Saturday in the final round of the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament at Wawasee High School.

Warsaw tallied six team points, while Wawasee had four.

Concord (16 points) won the event, while Goshen (13) was second, NorthWood (11) was third, Plymouth (10) was fourth, Northridge (9) finished fifth, and Elkhart Memorial (2) placed eighth.

Warsaw’s No. 1 doubles team of Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight were named All-NLC honorable mention.

The duo finished fifth after winning 7-6, 6-2 over Northridge’s Brant Brouillette and Cole Miller

Warsaw’s Jarret Orr and Michael Ray placed fourth after losing 6-3, 6-1 to Northridge’s Evan Nay and Aaron Cripe at No. 2 doubles.

Hayden Anderson, who substituted for Brian Elliott at Warsaw’s No. 3 singles spot, finished fifth with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Wawasee’s Colin Rhodes, who placed sixth.

Wawasee’s No. 1 and No. 2 singles players also finished sixth.

At No. 1 singles, Zach Leedy lost 6-0, 6-1 to Plymouth’s Mitch Rose, while Graham Perek lost 6-2, 6-1 to Plymouth’s Grant Houin at No. 2 singles.

Warsaw’s Caleb Williams beat Elkhart Memorial’s Chris Troyer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to finish seventh, while Reuben Williams won 6-1, 6-1 over Memorial’s Luke Leazenby to place seventh at No. 2 singles for the Tigers.

Wawasee’s doubles teams placed eighth.

Grant Brooks and Jacob Krugman lost 7-5, 6-3 to Memorial’s Mike Troyer and Brandon Bailey at No. 1 doubles, while Zeke Keim and Clayton Firestone lost 6-2, 6-0 to Memorial’s Garrett Culp and Zach Olena at No. 2 doubles.



Tigers Rout RedHawks

GOSHEN – Aaron Greene connected with Keegan Larsh for two touchdown passes to lead the Warsaw JV football team to 50-0 victory Saturday in a Northern Lakes Conference game at Goshen.

Cameron Harness rushed for a touchdown, while Parker Davenport returned a punt for a TD. Patrick Zollinger intercepted a pass for the Tigers (3-3, 2-1 NLC), while Brandon Estepp and Jose Martinez each recovered a fumble.



Manchester Places Second At Wabash

WABASH – The Manchester JV volleyball team finished second Saturday at the Wabash Invitational.

The Lady Squires made it to the championship match before losing 25-22, 25-13 to Wabash.



Wawasee Wins Central Noble Invitational

ALBION – The Wawasee freshman volleyball team went 4-0 to be the champions at Saturday’s Central Noble Invitational.

Wawasee defeated Fremont 25-12, 25-12; Northridge 25-17, 25-22; Winamac 25-12, 25-11; and Columbia City 25-24, 25-9.

Wawasee (16-5) was led by Laney Gross’ 34 assists, 17 kills, 15 aces and 13 digs.

Amber Beer tallied 14 kills, 10 aces and 10 digs for the Lady Warriors, while Dylan Konieczny registered 19 kills, 17 aces, eight assists and five digs.
