Editor, Times-Union: Opinions. Politics. Attitudes. These three things are more important to us than most are willing to admit. One thing for sure: We all have our “O’s” and “A’s” whether we admit it or not, so we need to do a bit of honest work on them OK?
About 55 of the founding fathers in this great nation, after hard work both diligent and prayerful, came up with a constitution for our republic that soon became one of the governmental “wonders of the world.”
Both major parties in this election agree on one thing: Right now we’re in the most crucial time any of us can remember. If that’s true this Constitutional Republic as it has been rightfullynamed needs to remember the question Ben Franklin was asked: “Mr. Franklin, do we have a monarchy or a republic?” He replied: “A Republic, if we can keep it.”
So there we have it. Shall we arise to the challenge to keep the “Constitutional Republic” or sell out trying to find some easy way to solve our self-imposed problems? We the people must decide.
Looking honestly at our bankrupt economy we know that we all must start “living within our means” financially. Will that be easy? No. It was not easy in 1929 and 10 years following, but we did it. Born in 1922, I was only 7, living on a farm in Georgia. I learned what frugality was long before hearing the word. Why? We had to. We faced hunger.
Two parents and 11 children.
Yes. We need to be careful who we elect for leaders. Getting through these moral and financial crises will not be simple or easy. But if we made it in the Great Depression (1929-39) then we have no excuse to whine and feel sorry for ourselves and say we face insurmountable obstacles.
My guess is that by this time all of you with a brain that works even a little know that no president nor party right now will have an easy time leading us back to solvency.
But, if we get honest, truthful leaders who will with patience lead us back to the foundation our founding fathers laid in ethical, financial and spiritual realities we will see a steady and “relatively” fast recovery that will truly bless us and our whole confused, needy world.
