Is it any wonder why this reader and millions of other Americans are fed up with all politicians? Bad enough our representatives in Washington make fools of themselves on a daily basis. Now, spite and boorish behavior have spilled onto the state level. The Democrats in the Indiana House have given democracy a black eye. How many working class people would keep their jobs if they simply walked away when facing adversity?
The voters of Indiana elected a majority of Republicans to the Indiana House in the last election. Doesn't that mean the voters have given the winning party a two-year window in which to showcase their program? If we are unhappy with the results, we can give them the boot in the next election. The current Democratic House members are not satisfied with this orderly democratic process. They choose to thwart the majority's proposals by skipping the state. One House member was quoted as saying this action took courage. I maintain it was cowardly.
Several Republican proposals are anathema to me, particularly school vouchers and charter schools, but I will not express my opposition by moving out of the state. This would be cowardly.
One of my sisters lived in Urbana for more than 60 years. I wonder what she would think of those brave souls sneaking into town to escape their responsibilities back in Indiana.
