Pierceton Town Marshal Tim Sammons is warning citizens of a scam claiming to call about an Amazon account.
Sammons said scammers are calling from the bogus phone number 574-376-7479 or sending “spoof” emails appearing to be from Amazon about “your Amazon account.”
The scammers are asking for credit card and bank account information. Pierceton Police Department recently investigated one case where the scammers pretended to be from Amazon and gained remote access to the victim’s personal computer and obtained sensitive banking information then withdrew thousands of dollars from the victim’s bank account, Sammons said.
"Never give your personal banking information to anyone who calls you first. Never allow anyone to gain remote access to your computer, tablet or other personal electronic devices,” Sammons said. “Most of the time these scammers are operating outside of the United States, making it almost impossible for local police to locate these criminals and prosecute them.”
Sammons reminds citizens that Amazon will not call and ask for your banking information or for personal information.
Sammons encourages citizens to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to PPD at 574-594-2232 or their local police agency.
