Open Letter To Bayh

Editor, Times-Union:

Dear Senator Bayh,

I am extremely disappointed in your recent vote to approve the Senate version of the health care bill. Below are five reasons why you should not vote for this bill as it comes out of the House and Senate "committee."

1. The bill does not explicitly exclude taxpayer funding of abortions. At best abortion is elective surgery that I and most Americans are vehemently against. At worst it is murder that has been "legalized." Do not vote for this bill if it does not specifically exclude taxpayer dollars from funding abortion.

2. The working out of the House and Senate versions of this bill are being carried out behind closed doors. This is exactly opposite of what then-presidential candidate Obama said would happen. He campaigned on a full disclosure of the process and the final bill. Do you even know what the final bill will say? Why is it being done behind closed doors? The only reason I can think of is that you don't want the American public to know the truth about this bill. How could you sign this without full knowledge of what this compromise says and how it will affect the American people?

3. Public opinion is against the bill because of its obscene costs in higher taxes, burdensome debt, anti-freedom mandates, rationing and reduced care for seniors. The American people have awakened to the fact that this health care bill is transformational legislation that will drag us against popular will into European-style Socialism and more government control. Why can't you see this? Perhaps this is your plan.

4. President Obama's claim that "everybody" will now be covered creates few winners but lots of losers. Universal health insurance will be achieved by forcing young people to pay the additional costs (insurance for the youngest third of the population would rise by 35 percent), and by restricting and rationing care for the elderly. I hope that you don't have elderly relatives that depend on Medicare. I do.

5. The Senate bill contains a number of what can be described as bribes to get certain Senators to vote for the bill. Senator Mary Landrieu received a $300 million increase in Medicaid funding for her state and Senator Ben Nelson received $100 million permanent exemption for Nebraska from the costs of Medicaid expansion in exchange for their votes. Sen. Bayh, you voted for this.

Citizens of Indiana, if you have concerns about this bill or how it has come about then you need to contact Sen. Bayh immediately and tell him to vote against it. Here is information about contacting Senator Bayh: Washington, 202-224-5623, fax 202-228-1377; Fort Wayne, 260-426-3151, fax 260-420-0060.
