You and your readers have doubtless noticed the "sense and nonsense" in the news these days. One of the most meaningful moments was when Michael Jackson's 11-year-old daughter, through her sobs, finally was able to speak what was in her young heart: "I just want to say: Daddy I love you." Those words spoke more to our humanity than all the rest we heard or saw the whole "Jackson week."
But I did garner a few other "human and common sense" things. Like, "If you find you are digging yourself into a hole, the smart thing is to quit digging." I think that was in reference to the so-called "stimulus package" which everyone seems to think got sadly misnamed, since nobody can name anything it has stimulated except fear and dread.
I did hear President Obama say again: "If you like the health care program you have, keep it." But he never told me how I can afford to keep what I have if I must help gobs of other people pay for their health care premiums. It's about all I can do to pay the premiums on my own policy. Oh, Did you hear this good one? One fellow called our president a vampire. No, not the kind of vampire that lives on blood, but the kind that lives on "applause." He finds it necessary for people to keep "braggin'" on him all the time, or he would fold up and die. Come to think of it, he may have something there. Maybe that's the reason that for more than a year now he keeps making big promises; things anyone with a lick of sense would know he can't possibly do. Seems like he's counting big on us all havin' as active a "forgetter" as he has. Anyhow, he seems to think makin' big promises to us all the time will keep us all in a good humor, but some of us are old enough to remember 1929.
We "old-timers" used to have a saying: "Pay-day some day." And we try to live like we believe it. We all like that idea when we loan money to someone else.
