Staff Report-
The Old Jail Museum, 121 N. Indiana St., Warsaw, will reopen to the public Wednesday for the 2023 season.
This year’s featured exhibit celebrates the Native American history of Kosciusko County.
Prior to the coming of white settlers to this area in the 1830s, the region was inhabited by members of both the Potawatomi and Miami Indian nations. The display showcases a number of artifacts recovered from various locations throughout the area. It also pays homage to a number of notable chiefs from this county including Miami leaders Papakeechie and his brother Chief Wawasee, as well as celebrated leaders of the Potawatomi tribe including Chiefs Monoquet, Musquawbuck and Mota, according to a provided news release.
Also a part of this exhibit is a display honoring local resident and Western artist Fred Olds. Olds taught art in the Warsaw school system for a number of years before relocating to Oklahoma where he achieved fame for his artwork, as well as becoming the curator of the Oklahoma Territorial Museum in Guthrie. The display features a number of Olds’ works and also includes a self-portrait and a bronze bust recently acquired through the Olds family.
The museum is planning an event and open house later this summer to highlight the Native American exhibit.
In addition, the museum is also featuring an exhibit honoring Vietnam-era veterans. The museum will be hosting an open house and a memorial ceremony on April 21 as part of the Third Fridays event that will honor veterans. The public is encouraged to turn out for the event.
Anyone owning a Vietnam-era military vehicle is encouraged to contact the museum as it is hoping to include several of those as a part of the event.
The museum is open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 574-269-1078 for more information.
