Editor, Times-Union:
A frequent bloviator of nonsensical political blather recently wrote to the Times-Union editor that I “wondered why we are called Americans in this country.”
Apparently this distraught person has some reading disabilities or comprehension inadequacies. My exact words in a recent article were, to-wit: “Why are U.S. citizens the only people called ‘Americans?’” My point was that there are 35 countries in the continents of North America and South America (also includes Central America and the Caribbean), but the people of the United States are the only ones called Americans. Is that not a bit elitist? Aren’t all the residents of both Americas entitled to be called Americans? If not, why not?
The aforementioned letter contributor continued his rant with a plethora of falsehoods and historical fiction and even seemed to insinuate that perhaps I just might be a perpetrator of treason. He also unabashedly shared his beliefs that he knows what people like me believe, who we hate, and where our allegiances lie — all based on his distorted understanding of our public statements and/or actions.
(I hope I haven’t used too many big words for his comprehension level … prompting him to submit another prolonged diatribe of denunciation.)
