Oakwood Cemetery Board Gets Update On East Side Road

Posted
The new road leading on the east side of Oakwood Cemetery is almost complete, the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents heard during a meeting Thursday.

Sexton Hal Heagy said a lot of grass has been sown along the road.

The main problem keeping the road from being opened is keeping people off it.

Heagy said he has the road blocked off, but people go around the barricades. He said earlier in the week, the cemetery had a funeral and he had “20-something loads of dirt” put down along the road because he didn’t want any low spots and put down some grass seed. Then someone in a van came through that area and, Heagy said, he has to fix what was disturbed.

The pins are in and Heagy said there are people “knocking on the door” to get in to that area of the cemetery, but he wants everything to be perfect before he opens it up.

In other business, there was no vote on an underground co-mingling cremains vault at the cemetery.

Heagy brought the issue to February’s meeting. He described it as a full-sized vault on a lot with tubes. It’s going to be ash funerals, and they want to dump their ashes in this vault.

Since then, all members have agreed with the project, but there hasn’t been a formal vote due to quorum issues.

During Thursday’s meeting, Board President Arthur Brown and Board member Chris Plack were present, but Board members Max Mock and Ellen Hoffer were absent.

Heagy said Ken Locke, corps administrator of The Salvation Army in Warsaw and director of the Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association, contacted Heagy. Heagy said it sounds like the American Legion wants to do something for Memorial Day at the chapel at the cemetery, which he may allow them to use. Heagy said there are no sound systems in the chapel, so the Legion might have to bring whatever they have on their own.

Heagy said he did not have any further details since he hasn’t been able to talk with Locke about the details.

In other business, the cemetery gave away 20 loads of wood this year, with two loads given away with April.

The wood was given away to those who need it. People are able to get vouchers from Combined Community Services for the wood. The cemetery gives a truckload of wood a month to heat their homes.

Heagy said the 20 loads is lower than what is typically given away in a normal year.
