A North Manchester man is facing charges after allegedly beating a woman and refusing to let her leave.
Gregory Wayne Watkins Jr., 34, of 12600 S. Ind. 13, #46, North Manchester, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 12:02 p.m. Friday and faces charges of criminal confinement, a Level 5 felony; domestic battery causing moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to the probable affidavit filed Oct. 1 in Kosciusko Superior Court II, on Sept. 20, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in reference to a domestic battery complaint. When police arrived, they found a woman who was “walking very slow, slightly bent over and holding her left side.” The woman told police she thought her ribs were broken and asked to be taken to the hospital.
While en route to the hospital, police told the woman they were there because of a domestic battery complaint. The woman told police, according to court papers, that she was “not going to ruin her husband’s life and tell them anything other than she fell while carrying groceries.” Police told the woman that if she changes her mind, to contact the sheriff’s office.
After the woman’s injuries were treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital – which included a cervical strain, bruised ribs, a contusion of the chest wall and a facial contusion – she went to police.
According to the affidavit, the woman told police that Watkins told her a child had broken their arm and that she needed to come home right away. The woman first went to a neighbor’s house and told the neighbor what was going on and to be ready in case she needed help, according to court papers.
When the woman arrived at the residence, she quickly discovered a child had not broken any bones, nor was the child present. Watkins then allegedly came out of the home, grabbed the woman by her hair and started hitting her on her head and body. Watkins then pulled her by her hair out of the vehicle, told her to get in the house and threw her onto the floor, where he hit and kicked her on the sides of her body. When the woman was able to get away from Watkins, he told her he was not going to let her leave, threw her to the floor again and began hitting and kicking her again, court papers state. The beating only stopped when the neighbor “entered the house and asked what the hell he was doing,” according to the affidavit.
