MENTONE – Norman L. Yates, 78, of 5789 S. CR 1000W, Mentone, died at 7:05 a.m. Dec. 29, 2012, in Life Care Center, Rochester. He was born July 20, 1934, in Betsy Lane, Ky., to Hartman and Edith Hall Yates. On Feb. 19, 1960, in Huntington, he married Joann Converse, who survives in Mentone. He had been a truckdriver and served his country in the U.S. Army. He attended First Baptist Church, Mentone. He played the guitar and he loved country music, especially Johnny Cash. He also loved classic cars and enjoyed candy and ice cream. He collected many toy classic cars. Also surviving are a daughter, Carol (and spouse Brian) Scrivens, Kendallville; two sons, Mark E. (and spouse Jan) Yates, Elkhart, and Michael (and spouse Michelle) Yates, Akron; five grandchildren, Heather Scrivens, Toni (and spouse Chris) Holt, Nathan, Kyle and J.T.; a sister, Lois (and spouse Rowland) Shepherd, North Manchester; and a brother, Kenny (and spouse Jamie) Yates, Paris, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Franklin Yates. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Pastor Michael Wilhite officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery, with graveside military rites by members of Warsaw American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
