No Ethics

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

Ho, hum, another member of Congress is being investigated for ethics violations. How can this be I wondered? Everyone knows they have no ethics.

It seems Representative Charlie Rangel is accused of having played a little fast and loose with the rules of our pay-to-play system of government. Why is this news? Isn't this the type of behavior government to the highest bidder invites?

"Need a campaign contribution? No problem, we'll write a check. Need to use our corporate jet? No problem, we'll have it ready and waiting. Need tickets to an already sold-out event? No problem, we'll take care of it. Need a nice vacation spot? No problem, here's the keys to my luxurious, European estate. When you decide to leave public service, we'll have jobs for you and your family if you vote favorably on that certain piece of upcoming legislation."

Congressman Rangel's problems stem not from his ethics violations. His problem stems from his incompetent selection of an inept cadre of lawyers, accountants and advisors unschooled on the ins and outs of our system of legalized bribery.

Congressman Rangel should have had his unreported income in an off-shore account like every other self-respecting tax cheat.
