I am writing this letter on behalf of my son, Jeff. Jeff is an electrical engineering major at IPFW. Jeff, like other students this time of year, is looking for summer employment to help defray his college expenses. He has sent out scores of resumes with no prospects. Perhaps Jeff's bad fortune is a result of an economic downturn. What is disappointing to me is Jeff deserves better. Jeff is an honorably discharged Iraqi Freedom veteran. The VA offers no employment help to its veterans. Jeff has many skills that would be helpful to any employer. We live in an area that probably overwhelmingly supported President Bush's decision to go to war. Yet this area can't help the veteran who risked his life to defend this country's decision to go to war. Perhaps I am overly sensitive to my son's situation because I am a Vietnam era veteran. I remember how society just wanted to forget an unpopular war and the soldiers who fought in it. Looks like history is repeating itself. Jeff will get through this time with the same courage he showed in Iraq, but even heroes need help.
