Name Blame

Editor, Times-Union:

Thank you for your apology Kevin Wayne Raypholtz. I don't believe any topics about the candidates are "off-limits" nor should they be. I don't believe either candidate expects the topics will be set aside or quenched as such is the nature of politics. Each person has the right to bring up topics about a particular presidential candidate as you have done. Some have already been defended by Obama as it relates to him. McCain has defended his positions as well. Both don't always give both sides of the issue for which political pundits make a living helping the electorate keep the candidates' stories straight even when they don't. My only complaint was that of blaming a candidate for the names his parents gave him is not right, especially if it stirs-up people against him for something he didn't do to himself or cause such as name choice.

As I said earlier, we don't have to defend the names our parents gave us. Blaming Barak Obama for his middle name of "Hussein" given to him by his parents is not fault of his. He doesn't use his middle name as many "everyday" people don't. In my case, I spent my whole life using the middle name my parents called me, but using my first name for legal documents as it always shows up there to match my birth certificate. Say what you will about the candidates, their positions and what you think those positions will do (in your opinion) to our country that we all hold dear. But, do not use the name his parents gave him to make more of your arguments than what really exists. That isn't fair! How many people coming to the USA changed their original names to minimize discrimination and persecution in their lives for one reason or another? I believe Senator Obama and Senator McCain discussed the abortion issue on the final debate. Obama didn't vote for the bill you mentioned about abortion as it didn't address the "health" of the mother in deciding abortion. Had it included such, Obama may have signed on. I believe the "health" of the mother has always been paramount even in biblical days. I'm against abortion, but the "health" of the mother has to be a factor in the decision in my opinion. Abortion should not be entered into lightly. Best wishes, Ray!
