Metzger Is Only Candidate For Clay Township Trustee

The only person who filed by Monday’s deadline for Clay Township trustee is a former police officer, Jacob Metzger.

The position became open with the resignation of Republican Helen Brown, effective Dec. 31. A caucus will be held at the Claypool Lions Building at 6 p.m. Thursday and is required even with only one candidate filing.

In a telephone interview Monday night, Metzger said he decided to seek the position because, “I believe that I can help the community I live in. It’s important to me to be involved.”

He graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 2012 and then served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 2012 to 2016. Metzger then served with the Warsaw Police Department from 2016 to 2020.

Wanting to be around his kids more, Metzger left the police force and began working for his family’s business, Metzger & Son Trucking, Silver Lake. He works as a mechanic, as well as whatever else he needs to do as it’s a family business.

Metzger said the skills he’s picked up over the years as an officer, in the Coast Guard and as a mechanic could be useful as a trustee if a person calls for help. His approach is to get directly involved to help someone when they need it.

He’s also familiar with budgeting, but expects that the process to actual set a budget will be a learning experience.

“I’ve always liked to jump in with both feet,” he said, and if he learns a new skill to help others, that will only better him.

He and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children with one on the way.
