The American public has seen the poppy tin and members of the American Legion Auxiliary faithfully asking for donation during the month of May for over 70 years. The poppy has been given a noble and respectable place in history. To wear the unique little flower made by unemployed and disabled veterans, you are saying thanks and helping a worthy cause by supporting our veterans around the world.
An American was the first-recorded incidence of a person wearing a poppy in remembrance of lives lost in WWI. This idea quickly spread around the world. So this is a special way to show remembrance and honor to those who gave their lives and health in war.
To understand why the Red Poppy has such significances, please continue to read:
Red poppies popped up in the battlefields and on soldiers' graves. A poppy seed seems to lay dormant in the soil, and when the soil is dug up it causes them to sprout. This took place in WWI in Flanders Field, Belgium. Where bombs fell, poppies bloomed everywhere. It must have been a beautiful site.
I have been in volunteer service to the auxiliary for over 60 years, and I want to encourage everyone to support our veterans and troops by making a donation this year and wear a poppy in remembrance.
Only once during the year does the auxiliary ask the public to give to their poppy fund, so the next time you see someone with poppies for a donation, give with pride.
