SYRACUSE – Mavis Ann Vanderveer, 85, Syracuse, died June 30, 2015, in her residence. She was born Oct. 10. 1929, in Goshen, to Clarence and Mildred Stiver Vance. On Oct. 7, 1951, she married Richard Vanderveer, who preceded her in death in 2013. She was a graduate of Goshen High School and attended Indiana University. She was a flight attendant for TWA, based in Kansas City and New York. After being married and after several moves, she graduated from Goshen College and earned a master of science in education from Indiana University. She was a much-loved fifth-grade teacher at Syracuse Elementary School for 20 years, retiring in 1984. She served for several years as coach of the Wawasee girls golf team and was a long-time member of the Max Welton Golf Club. Survivors are three nieces: Ann (and spouse Carlos) Bennett, Dayton, Ohio; Janet (and spouse Larry) Lant, Syracuse; and Amy (and spouse Scott) Williams, Jackson, Wyo.; her cousin, Cynthia Dale, Nashville; and three great-nieces and a great-nephew. Services will be at noon Thursday at Eastlund Funeral Home, 7458 E. CR 1000N, Syracuse. Burial is in Milford Cemetery at a later date.
