NORTH MANCHESTER – Martin Bloom Sacks, 73, of Warsaw, and formerly of Sidney, passed away at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Mason Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warsaw.
He was born March 27, 1947, in Warsaw, to Henry Martin Sacks and Lena Bloom. In 1971, he married Bonnie Lu Furnas. They divorced after 13 years of marriage.
Martin graduated from Warsaw High School in 1965 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Purdue Fort Wayne in 1969. He was a lifelong farmer and mechanic, working at Meyers Motors in Liberty Mills from 1969 to 1972. Although he was never in the military, he was a supporter and lifelong member of American Huey 369 in Peru, Military Vehicle Preservation Association, Air Force Association, ROTC and NRA.
He was also a certified TIG welding instructor. Martin was a man of faith and enjoyed drag racing, flying small planes, for which he had a pilot’s license, and tractor pulling. He often donated his time to plowing snow for the town of Sidney and the residents who lived there and was a local mechanic for farmers around his home. His work can be seen all over the world from sporting bike wheels and sporting wheelchairs, to wheels for the Chevrolet Sunraycer, which was raced in Australia.
He was a consultant for NASA and some his work can be seen in the Smithsonian Institution Museum. He was an intelligent and talented teacher, from teaching others his craft to his son life lessons, he was kind, patient and thorough in his teaching. He had worked as a research and development engineer and retired from Sun Metal in Warsaw in December 2019 after 47 years of service. He attended the Faith Baptist Church, North Manchester.
He is survived by his son, Daniel Martin (Katie) Sacks, of Claypool.
Services will be at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at McKee Mortuary, 1401 Ind. 114 W., North Manchester, with Pastor Jim Baughman officiating. Calling hours are 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 16 at the funeral home.
The family has entrusted McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with final arrangements.
