Martha Jane ScantlenMartha Jane Scantlen, a resident of Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester, passed away at 3 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2022, at her residence at the age of 93.
She was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Elkhart, to John and Isabel Hardy Chester.
Martha was a graduate of the class of 1948 Coldwater High School, Coldwater, Mich. In her early years she worked as a sculptor and a cook. Martha loved art, genealogy, history, writing, played the piano and crafts. She was a resident of Kosciusko County for the past 40 years where she was a homemaker.
She leaves behind her son, Ron (Vicky) Scantlen, Winona Lake; four daughters: Mary Scantlen, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Jane (Craig) Booth, Carmel; Ruth Mathis and Cathy (Darry) Piper, all of Kokomo. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and her sister, Ruth Pabreza, Lawrenceville, N.J. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.
Martha’s life will be celebrated with a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12 and officiated by Pastor Aaron Scantlen at Knauss Cemetery, Kinderhook, Mich. Arrangements entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw.
