A Logansport woman was arrested after allegedly trying to get a man to sell his house and taking $50,000 from his credit union account.
Dolly Daugherty, 55, is charged with theft, a level 6 felony. She was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 1:30 p.m. Friday on a $15,500 preliminary bond.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on Dec. 9 a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy talked with the man’s son who reported Daugherty took advantage of his father.
The deputy learned Daugherty convinced the man that she and the man should sell their individual houses, purchase a house together and Daugherty would take care of the man.
On Sept. 11, the man signed a durable power of attorney and health care representative attorney in fact that listed Daugherty to act as his attorney, health care representative and attorney in fact for him and manage all of his affairs.
On Oct. 30, the man was dropped off at a nursing home to transition into nursing care, according to court documents. As a nursing home representative walked Daugherty to his room, he said he was at the nursing home to visit someone. The representative contacted Daugherty who said they told the man he was only there to visit someone.
A detective learned a copy of the man’s power of attorney and health care representative attorney in fact was on file at a credit union. The detective learned that on Oct. 31 Daugherty went to the credit union and obtained a cashier’s check issued in her name from the man’s account in the amount of $50,000. A copy of the cashed cashier’s check indicated Daugherty deposited the $50,000 into her bank account Nov. 10.
The detective checked records from the bank, which showed the check was deposited into Daugherty’s bank account.
The bank records also showed on Nov. 10 Daugherty wrote the checks in the amounts of $11,100 for the nursing home, $5,000 for legal fees, $4,000 to a financial planner and $29,000 to deposit in another man’s bank account.
