A pair of former Warsaw Community High School boys basketball standouts have led their college teams to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II Men’s National Tournament, while a former Lady Tiger star saw her collegiate season end Friday.
Former Indiana All-Star and 2017 Warsaw grad Kyle Mangas hit a three-pointer at the buzzer Friday to lift defending men’s national champion Indiana Wesleyan University to an 87-86 win over Dakota Wesleyan in Sioux Falls, S.D.
As a freshman for IWU last season, Mangas was the national tournament’s MVP, and he’s picked up right where he left off.
In an 87-81 win over Washington Adventist University on Wednesday, Mangas tallied 29 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the top-seeded Wildcats.
He backed that up with Friday’s buzzer beater, finishing the game with 18 points, five assists and five rebounds.
IWU (29-5) will play Oregon Tech in a quarterfinal round game today at 5 p.m. EST.
Spring Arbor University junior Paul Marandet, a 2016 Warsaw grad, was 7 of 10 from the field in both of the Cougars’ two games at the national tournament so far.
On Wednesday, Marandet scored 17 points and dished out six assists as Spring Arbor opened tournament play with an 85-50 win over Indiana Tech.
In Friday’s round of 16, Marandet tallied 18 points and 12 assists to lead Spring Arbor to an 85-81 victory over University of Jamestown.
Spring Arbor (27-7) will play IU-East in a quarterfinal game today at 3 p.m. EST.
At the NAIA Division II Women’s National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, 2017 Warsaw grad Dayton Groninger had 10 points, four assists and a rebound Thursday as Indiana Wesleyan beat Bryan College 84-64.
In a second-round game on Friday, IWU’s women’s team fell 83-70 to Northwestern College of Iowa.
Groninger contributed nine points and five rebounds for the Wildcats, who finished the season with a 21-13 record.
Both the men’s and women’s NAIA Division II?National Tournaments are 32-team, single-elimination events.
