Local High School Sports Recaps For 2/7

Girls Basketball 

Whitko vs. Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 

Whitko’s phenomenal season will continue for at least another week, as the Lady ‘Cats defeated Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 69-35 at Woodlan High School on Saturday night to win the team’s second straight 2A sectional championship. The Lady ‘Cats are now 24-1 this season. 

It was a total team effort for Whitko, with Hazel Leffers and Kyra Lowe each scoring 12 points to lead the way. Lowe also grabbed a team-high four steals. Reese Stonebraker and Ally Brown each finished with eleven, with Stonebraker grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Brown grabbed seven boards. Jayma Stonebraker finished with eight. 

Whitko will face off against Eastside at Warsaw Community High School at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Lady Blazers ended the Lady ‘Cats’ season last year, winning 58-45 in the semi-state round. 

Triton vs. Culver Community 

Triton’s season came to an end on Friday night in the semifinal round of the 1A sectional at Oregon-Davis, as the Lady Trojans fell 37-30 to Culver Community. The team ends the season with a 8-16 record. 

Sophomore Savannah Hawley led the team with eight points. Chloe McKinney and Mylie Groves each had six, with McKinney grabbing 10 rebounds. 

Triton will return next season. 

Boys Basketball 

Fort Wayne North Side at Warsaw

Warsaw fell back below .500 on Saturday afternoon after losing 51-44 to Fort Wayne North Side. The Tigers are now 9-10 this season. 

Mydin Burgher led the team with 18 points. 

Warsaw remains at home for the next two games, starting with Tuesday’s contest against Marion. 

Triton at Caston 

Triton took a big step towards capturing a conference championship on Saturday, defeating Caston 46-41 to stand alone as the last undefeated team in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference. The Trojans are now 13-3 this winter, 7-0 in the HNAC. 

Gage Riffle led the team in scoring with 14 points. Jayden Overmyer finished with 13 on an efficient 6/7 shooting. Brady Wood added seven points. Caston’s Logan Mollenkopf led all scorers with 20. 

Triton hosts Trinity on Tuesday. 

Boys Wrestling

Warsaw at Penn Regional 

WCHS Wrestling placed 6th at the Penn Regional on Saturday while advancing 6 to next week’s Semi State.

The Tigers started the morning off strong with consecutive wins from the 106 through 126 weight classes as Tristan Wood, Ivahn Martinez, Alex Vallejo, and Gabe Veit all punched their tickets to Semi State.

Leo Castro was the next to advance at 144, and Enrique Silva moved on at 165.

Four of the qualifiers moved on with third place finishes: Tristan Wood (106), Ivahn Martinez (113), Alex Vallejo (120), and Leo Castro (144). 

Gabe Veit (126) and Enrique Silva (165) took fourth place.

The Tigers had four other competitors in action but did not qualify.

Warsaw will travel to East Chicago Central next weekend for a chance at moving on to the State Finals.
