Editor, Times-Union: The insanity I am going to tell you about has not only happened to my daughter, but many others in the state as well. In March of 2004 my daughter was forced off the road on a narrow street while trying to pull into a parking spot. A driver behind her tried to pass and there was no room. In reaction, my daughter swerved to the right clipping the front of a van. Since there was no way to prove someone ran her off the road, she accepted responsibility.
Fort Wayne police were called, insurances exchanged, all the known procedures were followed, damages paid. The police officer told her he was not responsible for notifying insurance. Duh! What was not known, nor information given, there is now a form you have to send to the State Office of Motor Vehicles even though you show your proof of insurance by showing your card. Thanks to a lot of numbskulls out there, this piece of paper might as well be burned for as much good as it does because these people give false insurance ID. Apparently one now needs to get the signature of their insurance agent or information from your insurance company before the state believes you have insurance! No one yet has made that clear as to what signature they need!
The state is suppose to send you a notice in approximately two months telling you your license will be suspended if you don't send in this paperwork. My daughter moved from her former apartment into another home and never got that notice. However, when she went to do her change of address on her driver's license, no red flags came up. She and her husband had moved in temporarily with his folks while they waited for a place to become available. So, twice since March of 2004 my daughter has changed her address on her license at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and no one told her!
At this point they are trying to get her re-instated; however, she can't drive or take her husband to work until this is resolved! Are any of you made of money and can afford this to happen to you? Bills will not get paid due to lost wages! I have no idea even now who is responsible for sending in the paperwork - the person involved or the insurance company. No one is saying! I do know our insurance agent has had a visit from a House Representative about how much trouble people are having with this! This happened the very day my daughter was calling to find out what to do.
Now I ask you, if they could find my daughter to tell her when her license could be reinstated, why the heck couldn't they find her to tell her it was going to get suspended unless this little known piece of paper wasn't filed! And why didn't they say something when she changed her address twice! This is totally unfair, totally ridiculous. Insurance companies, agents, state representatives and state senators should have made this law so well known people could state it word for word. Having your license suspended for such a stupid reason is ridiculous. She showed her card! She was and still is insured, yet she doesn't have a license. Go figure, folks! Call your state representatives, state senators and tell them to get the word out so people will know about this law! Or - let people go through what my daughter is going through.

It is that time of year to thank all the different people in town who make things better for our community. A big thank-you to the leaf cleaners, garbage men, street personnel, they make our town a nice place to live. To the men and women who work in the courthouse, the wonderful women in the Recorder's Office and Auditor and Treasurer offices they are so good with what they do and very patient! You are truly appreciated. Thank you too to the other offices in the courthouse that service thousands of people a year. Now a big thank you to the postal carriers, I don't know many people who would do what they do every day with a smile. The policemen and women both city and county, they put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe. To all the other personnel; the parks department, the sewage department, the city-county building people and jail staff. We take all of this for granted and we shouldn't.
We are very lucky in Warsaw to have such dedicated people working to make this a great community to live. Again thank you and have a wonderful holiday season.
