Senate Vote
Editor, Times-Union: Your vote, to fill the vacancy of U.S. Senator Dan Coats, is vitally important. How to choose between Democratic candidate Evan Bayh and Republican Paul Helmke does puzzle most voters. Consider:
Both claim Conservative ties and philosophies. Each has been elected and re-elected to important public offices. Each expounds his (claimed) record of accomplishments. Both shy away from the unpopular portion of their time in office. Each is a good family person with no (known) moral shortcomings. Both are attractive and personable with proven leadership qualities. Either one can claim national exposure - Bayh as Governor and Helmke as President of the U.S. Mayors Association. The major difference? Bayh is enjoying steak and campaigning the state via airplane and TV ads. Helmke is chewing hamburgers and going by bus, striving for favorable media and public support.
How does one choose the best candidate to fulfill your wishes? Remember this:
The U.S. Senate is the closet knit political club in our nation. When one is first elected to the senate, that new senator is forever beholden to his chosen political party - be it Democrat or Republican. This newly elected official is at the mercy of their party leadership, who they must turn to for any help, including: office space assignment; favorable committee assignment; support of their own bills, in committee; and support of their party if their bill reaches the full senate, for vote. Every day, in every way, they are obligated to political party before wishes of their constituents.
Much more so than members of the House of Representatives, senators cannot - without very good cause - cross up their party leadership. If they do, they can kiss their senate effectiveness goodbye. Prior "outside" political history is just that: History!
Your choice is apparent. Vote for the (Indiana) U.S. Senate candidate whose political party's agenda and proposed programs best suit your wants. That is what this senate race winner will vote for ... until year 2005!

Vandalism
Editor, Times-Union: This letter is to the person or persons who shattered the picture with a BB gun on my daughter's headstone at Oakwood Cemetery.
Its very hard to understand how some person or persons could have done something so destructive to such a beautiful picture.
My daughter (Margie Hobart) was such a beautiful, giving, kind, loving, caring person and never could or would have done something like this to anyone.
The old saying is "What goes around, comes around" and in this case it will happen to you.
Just because you destroyed the picture of her on her headstone, you can't erase the memory of her from all of us who loved her dearly and she had plenty who did love her.
I feel very sorry for the person or persons who did this because in time you will "pay." It takes a very sick mind to violate a grave. I hope God forgives you.
