Editor, Times-Union: Two beloved people have left their mark on our hearts, but the heritage they leave is eternal. We will not - and should not - and cannot forget.
However, there are many unsung heroes, heroines, and saints who have not been so eulogized, but who in a no less way have left their print on many lives. Some might feel that Mother Teresa's life was an example of the mystery of God which she so unselfishly shared with others. Princess Diana, in a similar way, shared the same loving compassion for others in the only way she felt she could give and was equipped to give. God gives us all varied talents to express his love.
Less noticeable, is Albert Sweitzer, physician, musician and missionary doctor in Africa: Dag Hammarskjold, secretary general of United Nations, served his country. Also, David Livingstone, Sojourner Truth, Ethel Waltes, Dr. Viggo Olsen for his medical/missionary work in Bangladesh. We must not forget the contribution of Martin Luther King and our present and living "saints," Billy Graham and Chuck Colson.
Everyone on this earth has a ministry. Many use it for good and some choose evil, but the blend of each life leaves it mark some way. We have recently lost another patriot - Red Skelton - who is noted for his interpretive rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance, often given to school children as well as his comic talent.
There is not enough paper or ink in the world to give credit where credit is due, but we can give it daily in our expression of appreciation and love whenever possible.
