Aid Our Own

Editor, Times-Union:
We are all fully aware of the devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina, and the billions of dollars that will be needed for recovery and rebuilding. The United States has given billions of dollars in foreign aid with many countries currently asking for additional aid. Who will come to the aid of the U.S. in our time of need? I believe this is a good time to aid our own.

Daylight Time

Editor, Times-Union:
A comment on Brett Berlin's letter.

The reason for stating Dixie Syndram had a problem with the truth was her implying that I was not telling the truth about it being dark on two specific dates and times and had nothing to do with DST on Oct. 31. I had stated it was dark on specific dates and times, it was. The Oct. 31 date was thrown in at the end of my letter as food for thought. I am sorry I missed the ending of daylight savings time by a couple of days, the point was that sunrise was not until near or after 8 a.m. for all of October. Also, beginning in 2007, DST lasts until the first Sunday in November. The fact is I see school buses on the road at 6:30 a.m. picking up children. It was dark on Aug. 15 at that time and it will be dark on Oct. 31 at that time.

I believe that we should do what is in the best interests of ourselves and families, not some businessman in Indianapolis as you are so proud to tout. Eastern time was set up to favor the east coast and I can assure you that the people of New York are not sending their children to school in the dark. Will the people I see out walking and jogging at 6 a.m. feel comfortable doing so in the dark? Our council, by their action or inaction, voted to send our children to school in the dark. Your side won. Quit gloating.
