Editor, Times-Union: Our government was established as a republic but now we see and hear "democracy."
A republic is a government of law, as stated in the Constitution, while a democracy is a government of man - which leads to anarchy and then oligarchy.
Picture in your mind a political spectrum. On the left is "no government" - anarchy. On the right is "total government" - oligarchy. In the middle is "limited government" - republic.
The Declaration of Independence and the Pledge of Allegiance show that our forefathers prayed to God for guidance. And the fourth stanza of our national anthem states: "Oh thus be it e'er when free men shall stand
"Between their lov'd homes and war's desolation!
"Blest with vict'ry and peace, may heav'n rescued land
"Praise the Pow'r that has made and preserv'd us a nation
"And conquer we must when our cause is just
"And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'
"And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
"O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

Fairness
Editor, Times-Union: Gary Gerard used 1,232 words to tell us why he didn't like Fahrenheit 9/11. Then he really told the whole story with his last 11 words: "I guess I won't be watching any of his stuff anytime soon." Sorry, Mr. Editor, you gave up your right to critique something when you refused to see it.
As a matter of fact, if the Times-Union is interested in the fairness inherent in allowing different viewpoints, it should campaign for your local theaters to show it. Folks here in San Diego County, the most conservative part of California, are lining up to see it. In fact it's a blockbuster hit all over the country, except in Warsaw, Indiana.

Compliment
Editor, Times-Union: Well, now, what do you think of that? A compliment from the Old Devil Dog himself!
Not bad from a man who, about five years ago, thought I was certifiable. Most people still do, so I really appreciate that.
