Gun Control Update

Editor, Times-Union:
Thanks, Matt, you remind me I haven't reported since the first of the year.

Mixed bag again this year. As always, good news and bad. It appears President Bush has shot himself in the foot a few too many times and we may very well lose the White House. The Senate hardly matters. Even though we supposedly control it, with Senators such as Lugar and McCain, it's still anti-Second Amendment. But as long as we can hold onto the House we should be all right. Not likely to get anything reversed but should be able to hold off anything new.

As you probably know, Ohio passed their carry permit a couple months ago. We now have two states that require no permit: Alaska and Vermont. Thirty-five states with some sort of "shall issue" permit, nine state with very restricted permits and only four states with no permit.

A couple bills moving through the House that should be of interest. H.R. 648, Rep. Joe Wilson's "Citizens Self-Defense Act" and H.R. 990, Rep. John Hostettler's "Secure Access to Firearms Enhancement Act." The former nothing more than a right to self-defense act and the latter a national carry permit.

For now let's hope President Bush can hold on, and don't forget to vote in November.

Art At The Fair

Editor, Times-Union:
Kosciusko County Fair, July 18-24.

The Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers are looking for energetic artists to show others your art. Whether it be cooking, needlework, crocheting, knitting, tatting, whatever is your specialty, this will be a good time to show off your art.

We have a quilting circle scheduled for Monday, crochet circle for Tuesday and knitting circle for Wednesday afternoon.

A quilting frame will be set up for the week. Anyone can try their hand at hand quilting. Quilt blocks will be demonstrated throughout Monday.

Ladies will be crocheting afghans and doilies Tuesday. Bring your project in and join us. Show us your special technique.

The knitting gals can show you how to get started Wednesday afternoon. Bring your knitting project and join us in the fun.

We are looking for someone who will show us how to tat, basket weaving, embroidery, rug hooking and cooking specialty. Do you have an art you would like to share with us? Call: 574-267-2732, 574-372-2340 or 574-834-7757 so we can add you to our schedule.

Thanks For Golf Results

Editor, Times-Union:
I would like to thank the sports department for adding the tournament results of the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and the Champion Tour to the Scoreboard page. I am sure the area golfers are pleased to be able to follow the tours and this is a nice addition to the Times-Union.

Good Samaritan

Editor, Times-Union:
Our son and family from Indianapolis were with us during the July 4th weekend. While enjoying the activities at the Village of Winona, our son misplaced his wallet containing important cards and papers.

To our great relief Officer Malcom Gilbert, Winona Lake Police Department, notified us the wallet had been found and delivered to him.

We want to say a grateful thank-you to this unknown person for being an honest and kind citizen.

Real Americans

Editor, Times-Union:
Mr. Perry, I am not going to defend Mr. Kitson for what he feels to write in the Times-Union. I admit some I like and some I don't, but what you wrote you do not know him.

I think you woke a sleeping tiger when you said the love of his life is guns. You kind of bit the potty on that. Mr. Kitson, as a lot of us Hoosiers do, believes in the Constitution and the right to bear arms. Plus we are not going to stand by while a dog chews on us or our kids.

Can I ask you what do they do down in New Orleans when attacked by a dog on your own land? Give it a milk bone and hope it goes away and finds someone else to chew on?

You-all must go through a lot of doggie treats until the police show up.

As for the other letters of Mr. Kitson, we all don't have the same ideas and ways of speaking.

Some of us up here are right wings some are left wing and a lot sit on the fence. We are just real Americans up here in northern Indiana. Sometime we agree and sometimes we don't. But we get our facts straight first. That's why the "screaming morons" move out of state.

Don't they have any papers down there that are worth writting to? Have a good day.
