Triathlon

Editor, Times-Union:
It is once again time for the Warsaw Optimists' Triathlon, and I would like to remind everyone who travels Pierceton Road from Winona Lake to Pierceton that Saturday morning, it will be heavily traveled by many bicycles. The last count I saw for registered triathletes for this event listed over 460 entries. We could very easily have 500 cyclists racing on that road Saturday morning.

Many of us train year-round for this triathlon and all we ask is that, on this one day, from 8 a.m. until about 11 a.m., you avoid driving on Pierceton Road. With that many bicycles, traveling in both directions, it is dangerous enough even without cars. So please, if you can, make it safer for all of us and use another route that morning.

Mowing Ditches

Editor, Times-Union:
Earlier this week, I was driving home and I hit a deer. The grass on the side of the road has not been cut this spring or summer. If the grass would have been cut like it's supposed to be, I might have been able to see the deer and my whole accident could have been avoided. Even one of the intersections at the end of my road has become dangerous because the grass is obstructing the view. Today, I noticed that one of my neighbors took the initiative to cut it themselves because the grass is getting too tall, but it shouldn't be their responsibility. This is definitely an issue that needs addressed!

'Under God'

Editor, Times-Union:
Red Skelton once mused that it would be a shame if someone decided the Pledge of Allegiance was a prayer and couldn't be said in the public school. Sadly, that is now coming to pass. The liberals and atheists are trying to remove the words "Under God" from the pledge. If the words "Under God" are offensive and have to be removed from the pledge, then the same words will have to be removed from the Gettysburg Address. No doubt, the liberals and atheists will be vying with each other for the honor of taking a jack hammer to the Lincoln Memorial and politically correcting the Gettysburg Address.
