Editor, Times-Union: Regarding Commander Tom Everett's, Post 49 American Legion, response to my letter (Color Guard).Ê
First, I am an active member of American Legion Post 253, North Webster; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Syracuse; Member-at-Large, Fleet Reserve Association; and Member-at-Large, Marine Corps Association. I served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. I am eligible!
Second, where have you ever observed a military Color Guard marching with rifles upside down?
I watched the ceremonies on Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery. There was not one Color Guard that entered that "hallowed ground" that did so except at "Shoulder Arms!" Not one!
However, sir, you do it your way. As long as I am able to march in any Color Guard, you may bet it will be in a military manner - rifles at "Shoulder Arms" or "Present Arms" if halted for Honors!
