Indispensable Farmers

Editor, Times-Union:
Much has been said concerning the farmers getting their crops out late this year, because of so much rain. We got lots of rain and not much snow this year. We could not live without the farmers. You wouldn't be eating the corn on the cob like people are buying today. I made a scalloped corn casserole yesterday that I love and it's healthy for me.

Before Mother's Day, I went to the Leesburg Cemetery to put flowers on my mother's grave and then went back again for Memorial Day to decorate the graves for my mother and father, husband and brother. Then I took a drive out on the Clunette road to see what the farmers had accomplished in getting their corn out. I was surprised to see many fields planted and corn up. One field I'm sure was 6 inches high. I came from the farm on the Clunette road; my dad owned the farm which is now the Polk Farm at the corner of CRs 600N and 300W. They tore the big barn down and the house, but left the two barns and some of the buildings. I drove on down the road to the Clunette Elevator. A long time ago, there was a little grocery store west of the elevator where the farmers liked to go down and visit each other. I drove home another way to check the plantings. Everything looked really good; some fields hadn't been cultivated, but the corn was coming up. I'm sure the crops will do really well as there is plenty of moisture in the soil from the rains and on June 21 summer begins and it will really get hot and it might even be better than some other years - we hope.

Farmers' Market

Editor, Times-Union:
Farmers' Market is not closing.

There have been rumors that the Kosciusko County Farmers' Market is closing. Those rumors are false!

This has been a difficult season due to the rain and cold weather. Crops have been slow in growing.

The market is open each Monday and Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and each Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.

We regret any inconvenience caused to those going to the Fairgrounds and finding no one there.

The produce is starting to grow and more products are coming to market. We hope to see you there. For information, call Eleanor Holt, 267-4170.
