Ruined Lives
Editor, Times-Union: Everyone keeps saying that there is no justice in the Vroman case, I agree. I will tell you who is being punished for the whole mess up, my husband. It was brought out in this whole media circus that my husband George had very little knowledge of the whole car stealing issue and no knowledge of the murder till after everyone was arrested. He has always totally cooperated with authorities and tried to give them any information he possibly knew, which was not much. I believe Jason tried to keep him out of all of it because he knew George is not a strong individual and caves in very easily. My husband is not a criminal mastermind. He has no prior offenses and is a very loving dad, who is deeply missed by his three young children. My 4-year-old has developed emotional problems because he had never been away from his daddy before this, he just doesn't understand.
George was ordered a four-year sentence under the assumption that it would be modified in exchange for testimony, but since everything got screwed up that was a lost hope. The next empty promise was that he could go on work release, but that was also a broken promise. I would just like to know why my husband was given such a harsh sentence when far more severe charges have been dropped against other individuals. I also want to know why my family keeps getting the runaround. Money talks in this county I believe. I am a hard-working mother but I am by no means rich except in love and support from friends, family and my wonderful church family. I feel like my children and I are being punished for all of this also. I by no means want to play down the severity of Kathy's murder, either. She was a very sweet lady who I can say I didn't know too well but always had a smile for me when I did see her. Every time I look at the baby blanket she knitted for my daughter it hurts inside knowing that all of this stupidity has ruined so many lives.

Treasurer Policy
Editor, Times-Union: The Treasurer of Kosciusko County has a policy that can affect any of us taxpayers. Here's how it is run.
In 1991 I, a farm owner in this county who lives 200 miles distant, sent in my usual tax payment a little early, in the middle of April. The check was dated on the date the taxes were due. The Treasurer's office mailed it back as the check was "post" dated. I returned the same checks to them which they then received by mail and cashed after the tax due date. Yes the mail is slow.
Because of this, they then charged me a late fee and interest. I did not think this was right as I had done nothing wrong. So I only paid the amount of tax I owed the next year, not the late fee and interest.
Every year since 1991 the same thing has happened. I complain to the Treasurer's office, file petitions for correction of error and complain some more when nothing happens. Now I will take this whole mess to small claims court filing against Stephanie Esenwein, the current treasurer.
She says when this happens they take out the interest and penalty from your tax payment FIRST, then claim the remaining amount is a payment against your tax bill. So you owe more each year you protest this.
She claims it is the software package's fault.
Come election year, are you taxpayers going to put up with this?
