Editor, Times-Union: Yes, we do need a larger jail. Why not consider buying the empty Owens grocery building on 2200 E. Center St.? A perfect building in an ideal location, plenty of parking space, large enough even for a basketball game in back. You can get more of those $100 a day out-of-town prisoners to make your balance due on this building. Think it over.

Cemetery Maintenance
Editor, Times-Union: Two weeks ago, we buried my mother-in-law in the Syracuse cemetery. I went there this past Saturday to visit her grave. What I saw brought tears to my eyes and made me very upset.
The dead flowers from her funeral were still on her grave. Her grave has not been leveled smooth, there were big chunks of dirt on top of her grave and deep holes at one end. Her grave looked more like a dumping ground for trash than a final resting place for her.
Where is the respect and dignity shown for the family, let alone for the deceased? The pain and grief is hard enough to have to go through at this time, then when you want to visit your loved one, you have to come to the cemetery and see how the grave of hers is not being taken care of. Believe me, the pain and grief starts all over again, just when you were trying to go on in your life without her.
This woman was my mother-in-law. A woman I had grown to love and respect. She deserves better than this. She was a beautiful and caring lady, not some kind of street person with no name or family. To whomever is supposed to be taking care of the cemetery, if you don't know how to take care of a cemetery, why don't you take a drive to Warsaw's Oakwood Cemetery and see how a cemetery is supposed to look.

Good Deed
Editor, Times-Union: It is time to acknowledge a good deed and excellent service by our local post office and a very helpful and courteous lady employee.
Inadvertently, I tossed a loose dividend check which I had already endorsed in with two letters which I mailed at the drive-up at the local post office.
The moral of the story is - don't endorse a check until you get to the bank and keep checks separate from your outgoing mail to avoid a problem like this.
So, hats off to the post office and the employees for service above and beyond the call of duty!

Rape Of Farmland
Editor, Times-Union: Earlier this week, several of us had the opportunity to witness approval given to the rape of more prime farmland. Despite a remonstrance that was well reasoned, well organized, well represented and well articulated, our county Commissioners passed by a two to one vote the rezoning of 69 acres on 450 North from agricultural to residential. Interestingly, while all three commissioners also serve on the board of the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District, only Mr. Jackson voted on the side of resource conservation.
A comment made by one of the commissioners during the meeting leads one to wonder if the rezoning of land for housing development may not be intended to provide some leverage to have EDIT passed. This might be something for folks to think about as they ponder where crops are going to be planted in coming years. It is ironic that on the same day this took place, the creation of a Farmland Preservation Council to help protect "rural atmosphere from sprawling development" was announced in Indiana.
