The following is a letter that my son-in-law wrote to his month-old daughter last week.
He gave me permission to share it with others, and my prayer is that we stop and remember those that are serving and protecting us.

Precious,
First and foremost, I love you ... more than I'll ever be able to show you.
Secondly, I'm sorry. Sorry that I couldn't be there for your birth. Sorry I couldn't be there to change your first diaper. Sorry I couldn't be there to hold you in the night.
I couldn't do these things because that's my sacrifice ... to make this world safer for you, I have to be in Iraq ... thousands of miles away. I have to be here to make sure you don't fear, to make sure you don't suffer. I have to be here to protect you. One day, you'll ask me why I wasn't there ... and I'll tell you just what I've written. I hope you'll understand. I wasn't there because ... I love you.
