Leesburg To Move Forward With Walking Paths Project

LEESBURG – The town of Leesburg can now proceed with its K21 Health Foundation project.

During the Town Council meeting Monday, President Christina Archer said everything for the application process has been completed and K21 has the quotes for the town’s walking path along both sides of Van Buren Street. She was told May 17 the town could proceed with the project.

Butt and Timmons Construction, Syracuse, is in charge of the project.

Archer said she could not get the K21 Health Foundation past the $200,000 mark for the project, so the town will have to see how much the money will take them with the project.

Archer also said she has talked with most of the residents affected about what was going on, but didn’t have anything in writing. Town attorney Nick Jacobs said he didn’t think the town needed anything in writing for them to do the project.

The ordinance regarding homeowners cleaning their sidewalks will still be in effect, even after the project is completed, Archer said. There isn’t a start date as of yet.

“I’ll be very happy when we get started with this,” she said.

In other business, the council:

• Was reminded the town’s clean-up days are June 23-24.

• Street Commissioner Craig Charlton said he had two complaints about the same dog. One of the complaints was about the dog barking and the other was about the dog being off its lead.

He said a copy of the ordinance was placed in the resident’s door. He said the dog was vicious and he would give the homeowners one more chance, otherwise they will be told the dog has to be removed.

Councilman Tom Moore said the town has an ordinance stating vicious dogs are not allowed within town limits.

• Learned Charlton is looking for quotes for microsealing.

• Learned from Derek Tenney that during one his maintenance checks of the main pumping station the generator did not disengage when it was supposed to. Tenney said he believes it’s going to be an ongoing issue.

Moore said the generator needed to be serviced and the issue needed to be figured out.

• Learned from Tenney there is some sludge built up at the bottom of the power station. He said he hasn’t made a call yet to Wet Well Wizards to see what the problem is.

• Learned the ordinances have not been updated yet on the town’s website as the town is still waiting on the updated ordinance books.

Moore asked if it was going to be an issue in enforcing ordinances for refuse or similar issues. Jacobs said he doesn’t think so as the ordinances should be in effect as the ordinances were published before the council approved them and the council voted on approving the updated ordinances.
