LEESBURG – Veterans were honored at Leesburg Elementary School’s Veterans Day program Friday.
The program began with the Warsaw Community High School JROTC presenting the colors during the pledge of allegiance.
Kindergarteners and first-graders sang “Veterans’ March,” second- and third-graders sang “All-American Me & You” and fourth- and fifth-graders sang “Because of You.” Sixth-graders performed “Yankee Doodle” on recorders. All students sang “Armed Forces Medley.”
Students Maddi Glova, Parker Stinfer, Salomé Lancheros and Jacks Phillips spoke during the program, thanking the veterans in attendance and talked about the history of Veterans Day.
They also told Leesburg students what veterans did for the country. Stinfer said veterans work hard to protect the country, with some fighting in wars to keep the country safe while others help in emergencies or provide food and supplies to those in need. Lancheros said they also help other countries when they need it. Phillips said veterans protect citizens’ rights.
All veterans in attendance - about a dozen - were invited to stand and share their name, branch, years of service and connection to a Leesburg student.
To close out the program, Taps was performed.
