Leesburg Candleria And Christmas Party Is Saturday

LEESBURG – Leesburg Candleria and Christmas Party will be held Saturday.

Town Councilwoman Christina Archer said she believed the Candleria and Christmas Party started in the 1980s. There were some lapses over the years when it wasn’t held.

Archer said she’s been organizing the event since she moved back to Leesburg about 10 years ago.

During the Candleria, boys and girls from the Leesburg Mighty Farmers 4-H Club and Boy Scouts from Troop 729 will put out between 1,300 and 1,500 luminaries, Archer said. They will do as many of the town’s streets as possible by putting the luminaries at the end of the curb. They will start at about 4:30 p.m. so they can be done by the time it starts getting dark.

The candles will last until midnight, or sometimes later if it’s not raining, Archer said.

For the Christmas party at 6 p.m., Santa Claus will be at the old firehouse. Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be served at the old fire station at 6 p.m. as well. There will be live music with Mike Beezley and friends who will be singing Christmas carols.

The main sponsor of the event the past couple of years has been Maple Leaf Farms, who has its corporate headquarters in Leesburg, Archer said. Nearly every business in Leesburg supports the event in some way.

Archer said they’re hoping for some nice weather, but those attending will have a good time either way.

The event allows people to get together and bring their families. It’s become sort of a tradition in Leesburg. Archer said she’s happy if she can keep the tradition alive.
