Late Warsaw Rally Falls Short At GoshenGOSHEN — The last time Warsaw took on Northern Lakes Conference foe Goshen, the game got away from the Tigers.

In the rematch, Warsaw had the tying run at third base and the go-ahead tally at first when the game ended.

The RedHawks held on to edge the Tigers 7-6 Friday at Phend Field.

“I like the way we competed and fought,” said Warsaw coach Andy Manes. “We had just one bad inning.

“We could have rolled over. The previous game against (Goshen), we really didn’t fight back and we lost 13-3. I appreciated the effort our guys gave the whole game.”

The Tigers pulled to within one run when Noah Burgh was plunked by an Austin Cain pitch to open the top of the seventh inning.

Starter Cain was then replaced by another right-hander in Reece Fisher. After a walk to Ian Glogovsky and a fielder’s choice by Liam Patton, which scored Burgh, Matt Shoemaker singled before Fisher got two infield pop-ups to end the game and earn the save.

Offensive leaders for Warsaw were Glogovsky and Jacob Hutcherson with two runs batted in each, Burgh and Hutcherson with two hits apiece and Burgh with two runs scored.

Extra-base hits rang off the bats of Glogovsky (home run) and Patton (double). The Tigers finished with seven hits.

“We had a lot of hard-hit balls,” said Manes. “At the end of the day, we didn’t string enough of them together.”

Warsaw scored two runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third frames and led 4-1 at that point.

Burgh (single to left field) and Glogovsky (walk) reached base to lead off the game. Burgh scored on Shoemaker’s fielder’s choice. Glogovsky crossed the plate on Hutcherson’s groundout.

Alex Light drew a lead-off walk in the Tigers second and later scored on Glogovsky’s sacrifice fly to center.

Patton opened the Warsaw third with a double to center and tallied his team’s third run thanks to a one-out single to center by Hutcherson.

Goshen (7-10, 4-4 NLC) tallied one run in the second on a solo homer to right by Braxton Kincaid off Tigers starter Mason Reber, then added five more runs in the third.

The uprising featured just one RedHawk hit, two Warsaw errors and three walks. Skylar Reyes doubled to left and scored on Jack Immel’s single to right in the fourth to put Goshen up 7-4.

Warsaw scored one run in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4. Glogovsky ripped a 1-0 pitch from Cain over the left field fence to lead off the inning.

The Tigers defense turned a pair of double plays. In the first, third baseman Glogovsky got a force at third and threw across to first baseman Hutcherson. The RedHawks fourth ended when Glogovsky caught a line drive and doubled off a runner with a throw to Hutcherson at first.

Shortstop Burgh (speared line drive off the bat of Bryant Robinson in the fourth) and center fielder Aaron Greene (made a diving catch to take a hit away from Fisher in the sixth) also turned in defensive games for Warsaw.

Right-hander Reber pitched the first 2 1/3 innings for the Tigers and gave up six runs, four hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Righty Joey Springer worked the last 3 2/3 innings and allowed one run and five hits. He did not walk anyone and struck out one.

Warsaw (5-11, 2-6 NLC) hosts Elkhart Memorial today.
