Lady Tiger Tennis HonoredSome teams call it a “repeat” when they win two championship titles in consecutive years, and three seasons in a row is called a “three-peat.”

The Times-Union  staff has no idea what to call a streak older than most of the players who carried it forward, but the Warsaw Tiger girls tennis team is our pick for Athlete of the Week for winning its 19th consecutive sectional championship last week.

After drawing a first-round bye, the Tigers won nine of 10 matches between its semifinal round and championship contest.

To put it in perspective, three players on Warsaw’s roster celebrated their 19th birthdays between Friday, when the Tigers beat Columbia City for the title, and today’s paper.

“It really got put in perspective today. The Ray twins, Maddie and Izzy, (Friday) was their 19th birthday,” Orban said. “And Rachel Boyle turns 19 on Sunday. All three of them kind of looked and said ‘wow! We were being born when we won the first one.’ It showed them it’s a long streak, and it put it in perspective for everybody, including us (coaches).”

The Tigers will play in the Culver Academies Regional semifinals on Tuesday, taking on the host Eagles. The regional championship will be on Wednesday.
