Sexton Hal Heagy updated the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents on cemetery projects during its meeting Thursday.
At February’s meeting, Heagy said a family would like to have an underground co-mingling cremains vault at the cemetery. He described it as a full-sized vault on a lot with tubes. It’s going to be ash funerals, and they want to dump their ashes in this vault.
In March, a motion was presented and seconded without a quorum being present.
Since March’s meeting, Heagy said he spoke with Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer about whether an in-person vote was needed for the underground co-mingling cremains vault. Heagy said he didn’t get anything negative from Thallemer. At first, Thallemer said he didn’t think it needed an in-person vote with a quorum, but decided it may be best. A vote was not held Thursday as two board members were not present. Heagy said at a future meeting, the Board will vote on the co-mingling vault when they have a quorum.
The vault has not been started yet and Heagy has not met with the person who brought the project to him about how he wants to do it.
Heagy said he thought the vault was a good thing and could catch on as it could save money and could keep families together.
In other business, the Board learned:
• The cemetery gave away five loads of wood in the giveaway in March.
The wood was given away to those who need it. People are able to get vouchers from Combined Community Services for the wood. The cemetery gives a truckload of wood a month to heat their homes.
Heagy said the cemetery has not given away as much wood as he expected and still has wood left.
Heagy said if he thinks the wood is going bad, he might give it to the Parks Department and they could use it at the campground.
• The new road on the east side of the cemetery has been marked with lot locations. The edges of the road have been filled with soil and grass seeds have been planted.
The next meeting is at 5 p.m. May 6 in the City Hall Council Chambers.
