FORT WAYNE – Ellie Snep posted a double-double, but the Whitko girls basketball team opened its season with a 47-32 loss Friday at Fort Wayne North Side.
The Lady Wildcats were down 7-6 after the first quarter.
They took the lead and headed into the break up 22-18.
Whiko (0-1) gave up the lead in the third quarter, but only trailed 33-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
Whitko coach Rick Bragg said that’s when his team’s lack of depth took its toll.
“While we are never going to use this as an excuse, we now know we have to continue to condition in practice to get to a point where this does not happen again,” Bragg said.
Snep scored 15 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, while Sarah Hewitt scored 11 points and Kayla Schipper added six points.
“We had way too many turnovers, which is something we can correct,” Bragg said. “We will continue to improve each day.”
Bragg also said that the final score was not an indicator of the effort the Lady Wildcats put forth throughout the game.
“I am so very proud of the seven kids who were in uniform and played as hard as they could for as long as they could,” he said.
Whitko will host Class 2A defending state champion Central Noble Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“We appreciate the Whitko nation supporting us tonight, and ask that they continue to get behind this team,”?Bragg said.
