Kosciusko Community YMCA Celebrates 10 Years Of Livestrong At The YMCA

Posted

Kosciusko Community YMCA is celebrating a major milestone this year: 10 years of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a free, evidence-based cancer survivorship program that has helped hundreds of local residents rebuild strength, confidence and quality of life after cancer treatment.
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone on Monday, Feb. 23 in the lobby of the Parkview Warsaw YMCA, with an open-house style celebration times from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Guests are invited to stop by, learn more about the program, celebrate survivors, and pick up a free LIVESTRONG t-shirt and bracelet while supplies last.
Since launching in Kosciusko County with the support of K21 Health Foundation, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA has grown into a powerful community resource. Over the past decade, the program has delivered:
• 64 classes
• Serving 411 cancer survivors
• Providing 2,304 hours of support and training
• Led by 26 LIVESTRONG coaches and supported by 8 chaplains
“LIVESTRONG truly embodies K21’s mission and the incredible spirit of our community,” said Rich Haddad, president and CEO of K21 Health Foundation. “Those navigating the challenges of cancer treatment are often in a deeply vulnerable place, and the YMCA provides vital physical and emotional support through this program. We are honored to have partnered with the Y for the past decade.”
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is offered at no cost to participants and is designed specifically for individuals who are living with, through or beyond cancer. The program focuses on rebuilding strength, improving energy levels, increasing mobility, and restoring confidence in a safe and supportive environment.
For participants, the impact goes far beyond physical fitness.
“I feel so much more connected to myself. I still have struggles but the bond with others has impacted my growth significantly. I don’t feel worthless but I feel like I am finding myself and seeing purpose,” said Megan, a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participant.
Another participant, Jason, said, “A couple months ago I had all but given up. Without the class I really don’t know where I would be. Livestrong has given me an outlook on life I’ve never had before. I’m very grateful.”
“This program exists because of strong community partnerships,” said Jim Swanson, CEO at the Kosciusko Community YMCA. “Support from organizations like the K21 Health Foundation make LIVESTRONG at the YMCA a reality and directly impacts the lives of cancer survivors in our community.”
The celebration will recognize the impact of the program, the resilience of participants and the community that has made it possible.
