Kosciusko Leadership Academy (KLA) hosted its annual Project Proud event on April 14 at The Roost, where this year’s cadets presented their white paper projects focused on addressing key challenges and opportunities within Kosciusko County.
Project Proud marks the culmination of the KLA program, during which cadets spend months researching, collaborating and developing actionable solutions to strengthen the community, according to a news release from KLA. Each project reflects a deep commitment to leadership, innovation and long-term impact, with teams competing for the Northenor Award.
This year’s presentations highlighted a diverse range of community-driven initiatives:
• Kosciusko County NFP Accounting Services (Accountability Kosciusko) promotes a new standard of financial care for small businesses and nonprofit organizations by creating an accounting support clinic that also provides hands-on learning opportunities for students.
• Small Steps, Big Impact is a community improvement program designed to help small communities move ideas into action through a structured, step-by-step framework that bridges the gap between vision and successful project execution.
• Second Chance Housing & Job Skills Training introduced a comprehensive program to support individuals transitioning from incarceration or recovery by providing stable housing, workforce training and financial literacy. The proposal emphasizes reducing recidivism while strengthening the local workforce pipeline.
• Loop It Forward launched a pilot recycling initiative to increase access to #2 plastic recycling (HDPE) in rural areas. By connecting local waste recovery efforts with manufacturers, the program seeks to reduce landfill waste while supporting local industry.
• Orthopedic Capital Innovation Center (OCIC) outlined a vision for a collaborative innovation hub designed to align education, industry and workforce development. The proposed center would strengthen Kosciusko County’s position as the Orthopedic Capital of the World by advancing talent development and technological innovation.
• Kosciusko Aquatic & Rowing Initiative introduced a phased, long-term plan to expand recreational and tourism opportunities through the development of rowing programs, a boathouse and eventually a community aquatic center. The initiative aims to enhance quality of life while driving economic impact.
• Kosciusko Childcare and Early Learning Hub focused on improving access to childcare resources by creating a centralized hub and community resource event. The project aims to address barriers such as affordability, availability and awareness while supporting families and workforce participation.
The annual white paper presentations highlight the cadets’ growth as leaders and their commitment to addressing real needs within Kosciusko County. KLA remains dedicated to developing informed and engaged leaders who are prepared to make a meaningful impact in the community.
The Kosciusko Leadership Academy is now in its 43rd year of service to the county.
