Katherine "Kate" Burns, 89, of Warsaw, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Jan. 25, 2011, in her residence, surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.
She was born June 10, 1921, in Fort Wayne, to Clyde and Elizabeth Farley Burrell. On Jan. 31, 1942, in Fort Wayne, she married John P. "Jack" Burns, who preceded her in death. They shared 62 years of marriage together.
She was the anchor and loving matriarch of her family. Her strong faith was a beautiful example for them all. She prayed the rosary daily and always had a card filled with the names of the people she was praying for by her side. To say that she loved her family is an understatement. She loved to cook and bake for them, and was most famous for her oatmeal cookies and carmel corn. She loved to sit and share stories about her life with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her faith and her family were the two most important treasures in her life. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, and graduated from Central Catholic High School and International Business College, Fort Wayne. She enjoyed many years as an administrative assistant in the athletic department of DePauw University and Iowa Wesleyan College. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are her children: Mike (and spouse Cynthia) Burns, Siesta Key, Fla.; Tim (and spouse Carol) Burns, Steve Burns (and Kathy Stuart) and Annette (and spouse Dick) Byers, all of Indianapolis; Tom (and spouse Jody) Burns, Warsaw; and Jeanine Michael, Kalamazoo, Mich.; a sister, Ruth Ann "Pam" Brown, Zionsville; a sister-in-law, Peggy Burrell, Fort Wayne; grandchildren: Chris (and spouse Kris), Patrick (and spouse Nikki), Sara, Megan, Matt, Dan, Andrea, Laura and Jillian Burns; Suzanne (and spouse Paul) Knittel; Kate (and spouse Paul) Nowak; Jennifer (and spouse Cash) Hair; Andrew Byers; Maureen (and spouse Shaun) McCarthy; Clair and Ally Michael; and RJ Stuart; and great-grandchildren: Kelly, Kasey, Kenzie, Kori and Colton Burns; Maddie, Jacob and Sam Nowak; Danny and Ryan Hair; and Louis and Dominic Knittel. She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom; a sister, Eileen; and a son, John Patrick Burns Jr.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, with Father Phil DeVolder officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
