K21 Provides $100K Grant To City For Multimodal Trail Study

As a requirement of a $400,000 federal Safe Streets for All grant the city of Warsaw received for the study, engineering and implementation of a demonstration project for a multimodal trail through downtown Warsaw, matching funds of $100,000 was needed.
The K21 Health Foundation is providing a grant for $100,000 to the city to meet that match.
On Friday, City Planner Justin Taylor presented an agreement between the city and K21 to the Board of Public Works and Safety for that grant.
“The purpose of this grant is to accommodate the local match portion of that federal funds. So the $400,000 that we got from the federal Department of Transportation needed a local match of 20%. K21 offered to match that,” Taylor said. “So every dollar we spend out from the federal grant, this will be 20 cents of that.”
He said K21 is aware the city does not have the contracts for the federal grant yet but K21 wanted to get things moving for their documentation of the grant. Taylor said they really don’t know when they’ll get the documents from the federal Department of Transportation yet.
“Just as a reminder, this is for the multimodal trail study and demonstration project to connect the east side of town to the west side of town, so that trail study would look at a route through downtown and propose a demonstration project to connect those trail systems. There’s about 4 miles of trail on the west side of town, there’s about 12 miles of trail that connect to the east, so we’re really excited about the opportunity to connect those two trail systems,” Taylor explained.
The Board of Works unanimously approved accepting the $100,000 grant from the K21 Health Foundation.
