John Lee Penrod

NORTH MANCHESTER – John Lee Penrod, 80, of rural North Manchester, died at 11:15 a.m. Feb. 10, 2012, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

He was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Kendallville, to Walter J. and Beulah Marie Cauffman Penrod. On Feb. 26, 1955, in Rolla, Mo., he married Alyce Jean Parker, who died May 9, 2001.

He was a lifelong farmer, graduated from Chester High School in 1949 and attended Manchester College. He was  a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of North Manchester Bible Church, Demming Masonic Lodge and the Farmers Union.

Surviving are seven children: Mark Penrod and Ruth (and spouse Thom) Reed, all of North Manchester; Roberta (and spouse Ted) Nichols, McComb, Ohio; David (and spouse Cara) Penrod, Violet (and spouse Virgil) Ozenbaugh and Tom (and spouse Rhonda) Penrod, all of North Manchester; and Jean (and spouse Rick) Sims, Columbia City; 27 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Walter Jay (and spouse Mary Jenet) Penrod, North Manchester. He also was preceded in death by a sister and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia.

Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, and one hour prior to service Thursday at the church.
