John Brookins, 82, of Warsaw, died at 5:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2013, in Grace Village Health Care, Winona Lake.
He was born June 6, 1930, in North Manchester, to Orble W. and Bertha Mae Bonewitz Brookins. On Nov. 21, 1981, he married Shirley Hatfield, who preceded him in death in November 2001.
He was a Warsaw resident since 1965. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a gunner with the Anti-Aircraft Artillery. He was formerly employed by Ditto’s Supermarket and Kroger Supermarket, both of Warsaw, as a meat cutter. He was a member of the Warsaw Moose Lodge and the American Legion Eel River Post 286, North Manchester.
Surviving are three daughters, Joni Brookins, Brenda (and spouse Dane) Weaver and Ellen (and spouse Steve) Stayer, all of Warsaw; two sons, Randy (and spouse Sandy) Hatfield, Warsaw, and Rod (and spouse Vicki) Hatfield, Olathe, Kan.; a sister, Lois Palmer, Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren: Greg Weaver, Brittany (and spouse Travis) Hartman, Eric (and spouse Kristin) Stayer, Tara (and spouse Justin) Kundert, Jeannie Hatfield, Stephanie Hatfield, Monica Hatfield, Nathan Hatfield, Rachell (and spouse Drew) Cooper, Curtis Hatfield, Ralph (and spouse Dana) Hatfield, Alyssa Hatfield and Quinn Hatfield; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Helen Price and Ruth Anne Hileman; a brother, Donald Brookins; and a grandson, Anthony Hatfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McHatton Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Steven Alles officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery.
Calling is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.
